THE 7 CLIMBS CHALLENGE

The 7 Colors of La Pierre are three formulas for a challenge: Climb la Pierre Saint-Martin pass via its seven access roads. From Tardets, Lanne-en-Barétous, Arette, Lourdios, Osse-en-Aspe, Lees-Athas on the French side and Isaba on the Spanish side, each of the seven routes offers extraordinary sensations in completely different atmospheres and unique landscapes in the world.

The Pierre Saint-Martin pass is unique in France, even in Europe and perhaps unique in the world, like the landscapes it offers. Accessible by seven different routes, from two countries and three provinces.

Following the collapse of the RN134 national road above Urdos, caused by the torrential rains that fell on the upper Aspe valley on the night of the 7th of september 2024, the access to the Somport pass from the French side is closed until spring 2025.
This is why the Ultra de La Pierre and the Tour de La Pierre, whose routes go through the Col du Somport, are suspended.
We are working on a new route for the Tour de La Pierre. Stay tuned!

LE tour DE LA PIERRE

Le Tour de La Pierre is the recreational outing of the Club des Pecs de La Pierre. A loop of 215 km and 4,700 m of positive altitude difference starting from Arette, which goes completely around the Pic d'Anie massif through the 4 provinces it dominates: Béarn, Aragon, Navarre and Basque Country. You choose your departure date, subject to the opening of the passes, between April 1 and October 30 of the current year. Your only obligations: Use a muscle bike, and provide us with the departure and arrival dates and times, the .gpx file and photos of the exit and entry signs for Arette and the signs for the main passes.

With the Tour de La Pierre, cyclists of all conditions will find what they are looking for. A long warm-up to the Somport pass, then from Villanua the series of small Aragonese passes before heading due north towards the legendary Port of Larrau, all in incredibly beautiful landscapes...

This apparently easy loop has 8 passes: Le Somport (1632 m.), Alto de Borau (1144 m.), Alto de Aisa (1227 m.), Alto de Jasa (1219 m.), Alto de Vedao (1083 m.), Alto de Machamachos (1141 m.), Puerto de Laza (1087 m.) and Port-de-Larrau (1573 m.). The sequence of 3 small passes: Borau, Aisa and Jasa must be taken seriously, and the respite areas before the Port of Larrau are very short... Finally, the Montory climb is there to remind us that we have muscles and they are very tired after more than 200 kilometers in the mountains!

ROAD CONDITIONS

As this is a challenge on mountain roads, it is necessary to take maximum precautions before setting out on the route, both regarding the weather conditions and the state of the roads.

Traffic conditions for the French part:  http://inforoute.le64.fr > Places > Main passes.

Traffic conditions for the Spanish part:  https://administracionelectronica.navarra.es/IncCarreteras/Mapa.aspx

Be careful in the Aragonese passes, some roads are not priority in terms of snow removal and maintenance. The greatest vigilance is therefore required on these 4 passes, particularly on the descents where obstacles (potholes, stones, damaged roads) are common.

It is strongly recommended to respect the route, by following the Ultra de La Pierre route in a clockwise direction.
